Mamma Mia! Theory: Who is Sophie's Father?

One of the many questions I have is, who is Sophie Sheridan’s biological father?

At the end of the movie, we are left with this question unanswered. Technically, Sam is her father after his marriage to Donna; but who is her real father? In my opinion, Bill is Sophie’s biological father. This is my theory.

Between the dates of July 17th and August 11th, Donna Sheridan had three romantic relations that she recorded in her diary. Bill was the second of these relations, coming into the picture on August 4th. This seems like a logical point to make in my argument because he wasn’t Donna’s first love, but he wasn’t her last. When talking to Sam about Donna, he states, “No, I hadn’t heard from her for 20 years, and then this invite out of the blue.” Sophie is 20 at the time of her wedding.

When Sam, Bill, and Harry arrive on the island and meet Sophie for the first time, Bill is the first to talk to her.

Bill: “I thought you looked familiar. Uh, Sophia?”

Sophie: “It’s Sophie.”

Bill: “Well, Sophia is the Greek.”

Sophie: “Well, I’m named after a Sophia.”

Bill: “I used to have a great aunt living on the mainland, named Sophia.”

More is revealed later in a conversation between the two of them at Sophie’s bachelorette party.

Bill: “How on Earth did Donna get money to buy this place?”

Sophie: “She was left some money by the old lady she looked after when I was little, Sophia, that I’m named after.”

Bill: “My Great Aunt Sophia?”

Sophie: “I guess.”

Bill: “I always heard her money was left to family.”

After hearing this and hearing that Sophie is 20, it dawns on him that he could possibly be her father. Bill then runs off after being overwhelmed by this possibility and Sophie goes after him. During this scene, the song Name of the Game was supposed to be sung to Bill by Sophie. This song was cut. If it would’ve remained in the movie, it would’ve been the only song shared between Sophie and one of her possible fathers. This scene can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtY_i1mP3OI

In addition, I feel like Sophie’s personality emulates Bill’s the most. Bill is categorized as the adventurous one and tends to take risks.  Sophie was “ransacking some old trunks” when she came across Donna’s diary, which led her to discovering Bill. She also took the risk of sending invitations to these three men, without her mother’s knowledge, having no idea if they would reply or even come.

In conclusion, I feel that Sophie has the deepest connection to Sam throughout the movie, but all the facts point to Bill.

Typical, isn’t it? You wait 20 years for a dad and then three come along at once.

  1. In the scene right after Donna and Sam got married, Donna gave Bill a kiss and a hug, then she pointed at him at it looked like she whispered; "It's you"....

  2. Plus, they had the most dramatic sort of revelation compared to the other two.

  5. My opinion is Sam, reason being is: I agree on Sam. Sophie had his talent for drawing, and he tried to have more of a “say so,” in her life than Bill and Harry. Like her not getting married and getting off the Island and even spoke with Donna about it…and in my opinion the aunt of Bill’s that Donna cared for when she was sick I believe was just trying to repay Donna for being there for her as her caregiver, and Donna named Sophie after her out of respect and the fact that she probably grew to love Bill’s aunt “as” family…and if you will think about it, none of them had seen Donna in 20 years and in addition to that Harry also agreed with Bill adding that “...come to think about it me neither,” in reference to the twenty year comment...and think about it, Sophie would still be 20 regardless, the three of the supposed conception dates with either of the three guys being with Donna are so close and given that a woman...so says a few doctors I have spoken with about my own children… can have the child two weeks early / two weeks late, and remembering that there is that two week period...early or late that you have to consider...one cannot just go by what he said about not hearing from her for the last twenty years, especially with Harry’s follow up to Bill’s comment...but hey this is just my opinion, have a good one...and I think the song after Sophie and Bill talked was cut out because Bill isn't her bio dad...

  6. Plus they're the only 2 with blonde hair?

  7. Facts point to Bill, because blonde is a recessive trait. Both the mother and father have to have blonde hair to have a baby with blonde hair. If the biological father were to be Sam or Harry, Sophie would have brown hair because brown is a dominant trait. Therefore, Bill is the biological father.

    1. Correct me if I'm wrong but ... I believe it is also possible for a blondexbrunet couple to have a blonde child if the brunet parent is a heterozygote; i.e., an individual that carries both the dominant and the recessive trait.

    2. My mother had dark brown hair and my father light hair. I came out blonde like my dad.

    3. That isn’t how it works. It’s possible for a dark haired parent to have one dominant and one recessive gene and either can be passed down, so two brunettes could have a blonde child, as could a blonde and brunette. A blonde, on the other hand, has two recessive genes, so if two had a brunette kid, Dad should be requesting a DNA test.
